"I am an Engineer" not just an Engineering Graduate - 1

It was a long time since I sat for writing something. Today I wanted to write this blog on Book " Become an Engineer not just an Engineering Graduate" for two reasons
  1. A book like this should be made available to Young Engineer graduates and working professionals
  2. I myself wanted to share my thoughts, experiences similar to what is mentioned in this book.

Before getting onto share about the book, I wanted to share something about Siva. 17th Dec 2010, is when I first met Siva for a HR interview to Robert Bosch. I was then a final year "Engineering Graduate" who wants to become a "Real Engineer". This HR Interview made me one.

My memory is very fresh regarding the meeting I had with him. During interview I mentioned that I used to blog. After the interview, I was in canteen having my lunch. To my surprise, I got a call from placement cell saying that "HR wants to meet me", leaving things as it is, I reached the placement cell. I was called by Siva to share his blog id. I was taken back, a HR from a reputed company waited to share his blog to me, since we share same interest.

I am not a regular reader of books. If I could remember I have read only three books apart from my college course works and study materials. Even those three books, I read each book on a single day and all from Chetan Bhagat. For a long time, I wanted to read the book written by Siva, as I always look upto him.

Yes, now I am done with that goal.

The book has Testimonials from great leaders from corporate and academics & foreword from most respected Dr.Mylswamy Annadurai Sir. But still I firmly believe I should give out my thoughts on this book, since as a student and after college as a speaker & visitor to colleges, this book has views and experience even I had come across.

Below I want to share my experience as a student, fresh graduate & engineer, experienced software tester and also a trainer.

Resume:
Though we are in the age of digital. Inspite of having online profiles in professional sites like LinkedIn, colleges and corporate still demand "Resume'" from college students during their Campus recruitment. During these years, I have witnessed so many Resume'.  Below are the observations I made
  • Most of the people do copy, paste & edit work of their friends or seniors Resume'
  • Students tend to believe a Resume should be as many pages as possible
  • Students go on to add projects, internships, workshops they were not part of
  • Students also mentioned they were member of clubs, they even heard of before
From what I believe and seen, my recommendation would be
  • It is not necessary we should be part of everything and know everything
  • Be true to yourself and mention only things what you are confident about in your profile
  • Make your Resume' look unique and different in a genuine way [Many colleges have a defined Resume' format, and entire college follows the same]
  • Get feedback on your Resume' from peers, seniors, teachers and working professionals
"A Resume' should be tailored made for each interview you attend based on the requirement or position we apply or based on company-profile", not the same Resume' for all the companies

To be Continued............
